Depenbrock Ingenieurwasserbau GmbH & Co. KG awarded the contract for the rehabilitation of the breakwater dam protecting the entrance area of the Curonian Spit ahead of the Port of Klaipeda, Lithuania.

Due to the planned deepening of the river channel, the the foot of the breakwater must be secured against slipping and the stone structure of the breakwater dam must be rehabilitated.

The securing of the breakwater foot is done by a underwater, back-anchored, combined pipe wall. The combined pipe wall has a length of 480m in the southern part and 162m in the northern part. In total, 642m of wall will be constructed, with the top of the wall up to 10m below water level.

The pipes are installed from the jack-up platform “Simone” into previously drilled boreholes, after which the intermediate sheet piles are driven in. Subsequently, the grout anchors are drilled and connected. All work is accompanied by extensive diving work The stone structure of the existing breakwater is being rehabilitated over a length of 1.5 km. The existing armor stones will be removed in sections, temporarily stored for assessment and, if necessary, reprocessing, and then reinstalled in the new geometry.
