Expansion "Europakai" Berth 4 Cuxhaven

The approx. 250 m long quay wall is divided into 8 blocks

In spring 2016, the joint venture consisting of Bilfinger Marine & Offshore Systems GmbH (now F + Z Baugesellschaft), TAGU and Nordsee received an order for the construction of the expansion of the Europakais LP 4 in Cuxhaven via a alternative offer with an optimised quay wall and shortened embankment.

The approx. 250 m long quay wall is divided into 8 blocks and consists of a mixed tubular sheet pile wall with a grid dimension of a=3.08 m, which is anchored by driven inclined piles. To shield the high loads on the sheet pile wall, a low-lying quay slab has been planned. This has a constant component height of 90 cm and is founded on in-situ concrete driven piles Ø61 cm.

The following profiles are used for the quay wall

  • Support tubes Ø1620x22 mm in steel grade S460MH or NH Length up to 43 m
  • Filling screed AZ 26-700, steel grade S355GP
  • Inclined pile HTM 600/151 in steel grade S355GP Lengths up to 67 m

By extending the eastern transverse wall, the consolidation phases have been shortened and the construction time optimized.

The quay facility is designed for traffic loads of 100 kN/m² in the control range and 200 kN/m² in the area of the heavy load blocks.

Another special challenge of the project were the thick soft layers in the area of the operating areas and the consolidation concept to be prepared for this with preload discharges and vertical drains, which had to be integrated into the construction progress and the short construction period.
